New Heritage Barley – from a handful of seeds to fields of gold

Welcome to the new webpage for New Heritage Barley. My name is Sarah de Vos, and I am the founder and director. Our mission is to bring heritage cultivars of barley back into commercial production allowing more choice for brewing and re-creating traditional beer. We begin with a handful of seed from the Germplasm Resources Unit at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK. After assessing the cultivars in trials, the best are bulked up to fields of gold. You’ll see in the photo that I’m standing in a field of Chevallier, still green, but later in the summer successfully harvested as our first commercial crop. Watch this space for more heritage growing news.
